About Us
MIPA was founded in 1937. Though times have changed since then, the guiding principles of MIPA remain the same – strong commitment to the education and well-being of children from birth through kindergarten on Mercer Island. Fundamentally, we’re a group of parents with young children who want to be informed about opportunities and resources for our kids as well as have fun with other families.
Advocacy for Young Children: MIPA champions the development of safe parks, engaging playgrounds, and valuable programs that make Mercer Island an exceptional environment for children to grow up in. Through fundraising efforts, MIPA partners with the City of Mercer Island to build and improve playgrounds. Projects have included new play structures at Deane’s Children’s Park (Dragon Park), Mercerdale Park (Train Park), and Luther Burbank Park. We work with the Mercer Island School District to help provide information valuable to parents as well as provide feedback from parents. We also provide information about how Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) and the Mercer Island Schools Foundation (MISD) make Mercer Island the best place to be as your children grow.
Memorable Events: MIPA's Preschool & Activities Fair showcases a vast array of options for your child's learning journey, from schools and sports to various enrichment programs. The annual MIPA Circus has been an island tradition since 1966, transporting generations of islanders into a world of wonder. We also hold an annual event to recognize outstanding preschool educators, nominated by parents themselves. Don’t forget to put the popular All Island Play Dates on your calendar.
Building Lasting Friendships: MIPA provides numerous opportunities to connect with other families. We offer weekly gatherings for parents with newborns, frequent play dates across the island, and a relaxed book club for adults. Additionally, our Friday Walking Group allows you to enjoy fresh air and talk with other parents.
A PTA for families with children 0-6. MIPA is proud to be the first PTA in Washington State representing preschool aged children; and the only PTA in the nation representing children from newborn through 6 years old.
If you'd like to actively contribute to MIPA, consider joining or renewing your membership.
